In this wonderful podcast about enabling great teams to solve touch problems, Shane Hastie, Lead Editor for Culture & Methods speaks to Adam Sypniewski of Deepgram, a 6-year old start-up focused on speech recognition.
His recommendation mirrors what I have long championed- look to become an Employer-of-Choice. Or, in the words of Adam “Make your environment so interesting that great people find you, rather than you need to find them.”
How does he do that? He looks for the passion in peoples’ voice. And then feels it is up to him and his team to culture it, nurture it, let their passion grow and to give it the outlets that they’ve been promising.
He asks questions:
• What do you love to do?
• What do you want to focus on?
• Which one of our problems do you want to solve?
And through their answers he builds teams and tells them to go off and solve them.
For Sypniewski it’s about asking ‘Do you have the passion and love for your job, for high performance computing world in general, that if we dropped you here, would you be excited to figure out how to solve the problems? You’d be excited to orient yourself to the space.’” And he knows that building great teams is also about encouraging diversity and creativity.
